War: Art and Conflict

Not only was the Spanish Civil War a dramatic event, it was also the catalyst for diverse artistic strategies and attitudes. This guided visit spotlights how this circumstance would influence the cultural scene that existed before the outbreak of war, upholding its sphere of influence throughout this period and once the conflict had ended.

Included among the different works that form the basis of this guided tour’s discourse, those that were assembled in the Pavilion of the Spanish Republic for the Universal Exhibition in Paris, held in 1937, stand out; for instance, Pablo Picasso’s Guernica, or Alexander Calder’s Mercury Fountain. Cultural volunteers lead school groups around the exhibition rooms that contextualise this period in a guided visit that takes place in Collection 1 of the Museo.

Aimed at: 14-16 year-olds in Secondary Education and Sixth Form Pupils

Days: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

Time: daily time slots at 10.15, 10.45 and 11.15 a.m. and Monday and Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Meeting point: Sabatini Building, Floor 1, Education Desk

Capacity: two groups/classes per centre, per day (maximum 50 people). During the 10.45 time slot a maximum of 25 people).

Length: one hour and thirty minutes
