The Spanish Civil War was not just a dramatic historical event, but it also served as a catalyst for a range of artistic strategies and attitudes. This guided visit highlights just how the situation was to influence the cultural landscape that existed before the outbreak of the war and would maintain its sphere of influence throughout its course and even once the conflict had ended.

The numerous works forming the basis of the visit’s discourse include those that were brought together for the Spanish Pavilion at the International Exposition in Paris in 1937, such as Pablo Picasso’s Guernica and Alexander Calder’s Mercury Fountain. Cultural volunteers take the Senior Citizen groups through the rooms that give context to these works on a guided visit, taking place in the Museum’s Collection 1.
