Creating a Sense of Belonging to the Museo Reina Sofía among Civil Society

The Museo Reina Sofía Foundation is a private, not-for-profit cultural organisation with primary objectives that include advocating and supporting the Museo Reina Sofía’s mission as a channel for the promotion and critical knowledge of and the public’s access to modern and contemporary art in its many manifestations.

The Foundation came into being inside a context where new relations are practiced between public cultural institutions and the private sphere, relations that have arisen in light of the new challenges the Museo faces in the twenty-first century.

Within this framework, the Foundation is put forward as a purpose-built model set up to create a sense of belonging to the Museo among civil society by way of a public-private synthesis cemented over time.

Established on 23 November 2012 through the initiative of a group of kindred Ibero-American collectors in relation to the Museo, it has acted ever since as a tool for different sectors of society to collaborate, on an international scale, with the Museo, applying new forms of patronage. The signatory trustees of the Constitutional Charter are Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (Venezuela), Jorge Grüenberg (Peru), Helga Müller de Alvear (Spain), Jose Olympio Pereira (Brazil), Juan Antonio Pérez Simón (Mexico), Álvaro Saieh Bendeck (Chile), Silvia Gold and Hugo Sigman (Argentina), Susana and Ricardo Steinbruch (Brazil), Beatriz de Vasconcelos Quintella and Luiz Augusto Teixeira de Freitas (Brazil) and Juan Carlos Verme (Peru).

Enriching the Museo Reina Sofía Collection

The Foundation’s Mission

The Foundation contributes to enriching the Museo Reina Sofía Collection through the long-term loan of its entire art collection, which, in turn, is the outcome of acquisitions, by purchase or donation in kind, by members of the organisation or by third parties. All acquisitions are defined within the framework of the interests established by mutual agreement between the Foundation and the Museo. The acquisitions carried out by the Foundation require the approval of its Board of Trustees, while the loans are subject to approval by the Museo’s Royal Board of Trustees.  

Furthermore, the Foundation acts as an international catalyst of the Museo, fostering new collaboration networks with a focus on Latin America. This is obtained through the law that updates the operations of the Museo (Royal Decree 188/2013), thus allowing for better coordination with the Foundation.

Loans that accomplish the common objectives between the Foundation and the Museo

The Foundation was established with a special foundational endowment: Juan Muñoz’s 1984 work Baranda de Alcamé.

In accordance with the Foundation’s Statutes, article 40 states that, in the case of cessation, all assets and rights (artistic holdings) will be the property of the Museo Reina Sofía, with all works incorporated into its heritage.

On 31 December 2023, the Foundation’s contribution and that of its namesake in the USA, was in the region of 25 million euros, with over 1,000 works by 300 artists loaned to the Museo. It is worth noting that, to date, the strategic lines of acquisition have focused on performing arts, photobooks and Latin American graphic art, resulting in 89% of the total number of the Foundation’s works being by Latin American artists, with a representation of 87% of the region with regard to the number of artists.

The Foundation adheres to Spain’s Law of Foundations and is governed by a Board of Trustees made up of ex officio members affiliated to the entity in accordance with their public position and elected trustees.

Within the Foundation, there are also bodies such as the International Patronage Board and the Reina Circle, which are exempt from administration work and align their activity towards enriching the artistic holdings of the Foundation and, therefore, the Museo.

Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees is the highest governing, administration and representational authority of the Foundation. Through an agreement by the Board, the maximum number of members is set at thirty people.

Executive Committee

The Board of Trustees selects the Executive Committee from its members, although, in accordance with its Statutes, it must include, as ex officio members, the president of the Foundation and the director of the Museo. Within this Committee, the Board of Trustees delegates all management responsibilities authorised by law in the period of time between plenary meetings. Furthermore, it is in charge of implementing the agreements adopted by the plenary session and its assessment.

The Reina Circle

The Reina Circle is an innovative project fostered by the Museo Reina Sofía Foundation and constitutes a space in which new generations can share and grow in their passion for art and culture, in addition to creating strategies that encourage the strengthening of the cultural framework and nouvel collecting. The space comes into existence from the need to bolster the workings of the art ecosystem and to reflect on what collecting is and its role inside a complex cultural cartography, thereby strengthening it for future generations.

The Reina Circle

The Museo Reina Sofía Foundation – MRSF (USA)

This entity, promoted by the Foundation in the USA, has been approved as a Public Charity in applying the US Internal Revenue Code. As a result, it has been set up to receive donations of money and works of art that are exempt from taxes stipulated by law.

MRSF (USA) has its own Board of Trustees and the works it receives by donation are loaned to the Museo. Moreover, the monetary donations it receives are allocated to acquisitions.
